Facts about Compact Fluorescent Lighting (CFL)
Compact Fluorescent bulbs are slowly replacing the traditional Incandescent bulb that was invented by Thomas Edison more then 120 years ago. These Incandescent bulbs work by heating a metal filament in a vacuum, which end up releasing 90% of the energy as heat. This makes these types of bulbs extremely inefficient. If you take into consideration that Americans keep about 73 million lights on every day for a period of between four and 12 hours you can begin to see how much energy and money is wasted on alone. This is why Incandescent bulbs as we know them today will be begin to be phased beginning in the year 2012.
Here a few facts about the impact changing traditional incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs from SYLVANIA can have on the planet:
If we changed a bulb for every child in America, each year we would save enough energy to light nearly 2 million homes, $380 million on energy bills, and the equivalent in greenhouse gases to the emissions from more than half a million cars.
If every American home replaced just one light with an ENERGY STAR, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars.
Lighting accounts for nearly 20% of an average home’s electricity bill
All CFLs are not created equal. To earn the government's ENERGY STAR mark, a CFL must meet strict energy efficiency standards set by the US Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy, as well as quality and lifetime guidelines.
