Last fall, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) launched a sustainable house design competition in partnership with the Design Exchange, Canada's design museum and center for design research and education. This national design competition presented a challenge for multidisciplinary design teams to create a demonstration center, in the form of an affordable, adaptable single family home. OSRAM SYLVANIA LTD. is a proud sponsor of this initiative and will be providing innovative and energy-efficient lighting products to be used in the newly constructed home.
Seventeen teams comprised of architects, designers and engineers from across Canada were formed with an underlying goal of creating the best design for an environmentally friendly home that would serve as the model for an entire subdivision in Vaughan, north of Toronto. The house will be constructed at The Living City Campus, now under development at the Kortright Center for Conservation. Once built, the archetype house will stand as a tool to engage builders and developers and educate home owners on what to look for in green home design. |

The winning entry was announced at a summer solstice gala event held at the Design Exchange. "Building Blocks" was submitted by a design team which included three architects, a mechanical engineer, an industrial design student and an architectural design student. Using a holistic and interactive approach to design, and measuring progress with the LEED for Homes™ green building rating system, the winning team's design will be turned into reality beginning in October of this year when construction will commence on the model home. |

| Construction of the winning design will commence in Spring 2007. | |
Construction on the house is planned to start in April 2007 with completion in the fall of 2007. The house, which will be open to the public, will be highly interactive, providing educational programming, exhibits, tours and workshops. To keep the dwelling relevant for years to come, it will be configured in such a way that the new technologies, including lighting, will be exhibited, modified and added over the years. This demonstration house will serve to create awareness and build understanding of sustainable technologies and building processes, with the knowledge that the smaller-scale choices we make in our own homes can affect large-scale environmental consequences, like climate change. |
