OSRAM SYLVANIA HELPS GREENSBORO COLISEUM GO GREEN

Energy-efficient sporting facility is a winner for town and its residents

THE SITUATION:

The Greensboro Coliseum of Greensboro, N.C. provides a large space for all types of sporting events in North Carolina. It offers a 23,500 person capacity as well as a 167,000 sq. ft. special events center which can be broken up into three halls or 11 meeting rooms. Since expansion in 1994, the Greensboro Coliseum has taken on environmental responsibility as its number one initiative. As one of the largest arenas on the East Coast, the Greensboro Coliseum plans to be an example of environmental friendliness for sporting venues nationwide.

The Greensboro Coliseum is looking to reduce utility bills by installing new energy-efficient equipment that will reduce energy costs and create an environmentally friendly venue for its residents.

THE SOLUTION:

North American lighting leader OSRAM SYLVANIA and Greensboro Coliseum joined forces in the green movement and have created a plan for a more energy-efficient sports arena for North Carolina residents.

Greensboro Coliseum has been taking steps toward energy savings by implementing energy-efficient lighting system retrofits from OSRAM SYLVANIA, as well as installing water-conserving plumbing fixtures and making major upgrades to its heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Together, these facility improvements are expected to reduce electric consumption by nearly a quarter, and cut water consumption and natural gas usage in half. These energy initiatives could result in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by more than 1,700 tons per year.

“OSRAM SYLVANIA’s ultimate goal has been to help the Greensboro Coliseum improve its energy-efficiency to reduce the long-term effects of the facility’s green house gas emissions,” ____________ of OSRAM SYLVANIA, said. “OSRAM SYLVANIA is dedicated to combating the negative effects of climate change, and is consistently working to make communities and their residents more energy-efficient.”

Greensboro Coliseum’s collaboration with OSRAM SYLVANIA included relamping more than 2,700 lighting fixtures with retrofit lamps. With the lighting load reduced by 187 kilowatts (kw), the new lighting system will save 956,727 kilowatts per hour (kwh) and will eventually result in a 33 percent reduction in energy costs. The long-term effects of this energy-saving plan will calculate to $63,000 in annual energy savings, plus operational savings due to the usage of fluorescent lamps that boast longer life. The replacement of all of these lamps will result in an overall pollution savings of more than 600 tons.

SUMMARY:
