PRUDENTIAL TOWER LOOKS PRETTY IN PINK
OSRAM Helps Transform Glass and Steel into Tower of Hope
to Support Breast Cancer Research and Honor Survivors
For just one night, Boston’s famed Prudential Tower was illuminated in a brilliant wash of pink and magenta with theatrical lamps provided by the Display/Optic division of event sponsor OSRAM SYLVANIA. The October 6th event was part of the Estée Lauder Companies.' campaign, the Breast Cancer Awareness 2005 pink illumination ceremony to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Available Light of Salem, Mass designed and staged the spectacular Cinderella-like transformation of the famed steel and glass building into a tower of hope.
Having lit the façade of the Prudential Tower with theatrical luminaires a number of times in recent years, Available Light knew that pink, the official color of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, would be a real challenge. Not only was the building face overwhelmingly constructed of glass, but what other little reflective structure that existed had an icy blue quality to it.
“OSRAM short arc lamps pack a solid wallop, which is exactly the firepower we needed!” said Steven Rosen, principal of Available Lighting. “We also wanted to add a certain excitement of the event. So we used computer-automated luminaires with onboard programmable color mixing systems to paint the building in a dynamic watercolor of pinks and magentas. We then located these luminaires in two discreet locations to achieve a huge visual impact for both the crowd at the base of the building and those looking on from distant views of this landmark structure,” he added.
To accentuate the grand scale of the Prudential Tower’s façade, Available Light positioned nine COEMAR Panorama CYC Power fixtures at the base of the building. Each Panorama fixture
is outfitted with two (or a total of 18) OSRAM 4ArXS HSD® 575 W short arc lamps.
The powerful yet compact OSRAM 4ArXS HSD metal halide lamps combine patented eXtreme Seal technology and reliable cold start qualities to produce high luminous efficacy, color stability and consistency as well as different color temperatures ranging from 6000 K to 8000 K. OSRAM recently added long-life lamps to this particular lamp family, thus extending the average service life of the lamp of 2,000 hours to 6,000 hours.
Available Light ensured that the pink and magenta wash could be viewed from all over Boston by taking over the rooftop of a building across the street from the Prudential Tower. The team located six Vari-Lite® VL2500™ Spot luminaires each with the OSRAM HTI® 705W/SE Watt lamp and six Vari-Lite VL3000™ Spot luminaires each with the OSRAM SharXS® HTI® 1200 W/D7/60 Watt short arc lamp.
With a color temperature of 7500 K, the OSRAM SharXS HTI 700W/D4/75 short-arc lamp combines uniform dimensions and exceptional brightness, higher efficiency and patented eXtreme Seal for increased heat tolerance up to 450°C at the pinch seal to withstand greater thermal stress than conventional types.
The overall lighting system was controlled by a single Hog PC control system with wireless DMX control communicating with both light batteries separated by 600 feet.
As the crowd watched in awe, Sally Moran, OSRAM SYLVANIA spokesperson captured the moment. “Tonight, the Prudential Center stands as a symbol of power and strength in the fight against breast cancer. We hope that the rosy glow of the building will be reflected throughout the world to help defeat breast cancer permanently,” said Moran.
