SYLVANIA is a leading manufacturer of precision tungsten rod products for use as electrodes in Gas Tungsten Arc-Welding (GTAW) also known as Tungsten Inert Gas Welding (TIG).  These electrodes are also used for Plasma Cutting.  The product line consists of six alloys of tungsten.  All SYLVANIA tungsten electrodes comply with AWS Specification A5.12 98.

TYPES

PURETUNG®	SYLVANIA designation for pure tungsten electrodes.  These electrodes are for general purpose use and will give good results welding a variety of metals under many operating conditions.  Color Code—green.
1% THORIATED TUNGSTEN	SYLVANIA designation for thorium dioxide doped tungsten electrodes containing 0.8% to 1.2% ThO2.  These electrodes provide easy arc start­ing, arc stability, good current capacity, and resistance to weld pool contamination.  Color code—yellow.
2% THORIATED TUNGSTEN	SYLVANIA designation for thorium dioxide doped tungsten electrodes containing 1.8% to 2.2% ThO2.  These electrodes have easier arc start­ing, better arc stability, higher current capacity, longer life, and increased resistance to weld pool contamination when compared with 1% thoriated.  Color code—red.
LANTHANA ONE POINT FIVEÔ	SYLVANIA designation for lanthanum oxide doped tungsten electrodes containing 1.2% to 1.6% La2O3 by weight.  These electrodes can be used as a non-radioactive substitute for 2% thoriated tungsten.  They will provide very similar performance with a minimum amount of adjustment of operating conditions required.  These materials are certified to be free of radioactivity.  Color code—gray.
2% CERIATED TUNGSTEN	SYLVANIA designation for cerium dioxide doped tungsten electrodes containing 1.8% to 2.2% CeO2.  These electrodes can be used as a substitute for 2% thoriated in most applications.  Ceriated electrodes are characterized by ease of starting, good arc stability, long life, high current capacity, and lack of radioactivity.  Color code—orange.
ZIRTUNG®	SYLVANIA developed zirconium dioxide doped tungsten electrodes containing less than 1% ZrO2.  Longer life and better operation can be expected of these electrodes in certain types of AC weld­ing.  Color code—brown.
