As in ancient times, a torchiere gives a space an upward glow except today the light source is shielded from view eliminating undesirable glare.  The even, diffuse light gives a soft level of ambient light for just about any activity in the space.  Also just like a floor lamp, place it in a room in just the right spot to create the best visual environment.  Torchieres are available in incandescent, halogen and compact fluorescent versions.
