North Carolina Capitol Re-Lit with METALARC®

The Situation

The North Carolina State Capitol built in 1840 was lit with incandescent lamps in 1929. The 70-year old system was inefficient and difficult to maintain. It needed a new system that would address these issues while preserving the integrity of the building. Since the property is a national historic landmark, any changes to the system required a variety of approvals. Ultimately, the proposal included refurbishing all existing fixtures with state of the art technologies, including SYLVANIA lamps. Carolina Power and Light co-sponsored the project with the State of North Carolina.

The Solution

Lighting consultants, Roger Lane of Lighting Solutions, Inc. and Bob Henderson of RLH Consultants improved the performance of existing incandescent post top fixtures by incorporating 100W coated, METALARC PRO-TECH lamps and type V internal glass refractors. The results include increased vertical footcandles and minimized glare from period style non-cutoff luminaires. Fixtures mounted on 20-foot poles were upgraded with 150W, coated, METALARC PRO-TECH lamps and new reflectors and/or refractors. Additionally, balcony and grade level façade equipment was upgraded with custom fit reflectors and fresnel or striated lenses.

The energy efficient METALARC PRO-TECH lamps used on the project feature 15,000 hours average rated life, yielded 57% less energy consumption and considerable maintenance cost savings over previously installed 300W and 400W incandescent lamps. At 2900K the lamps have a warm incandescent-like color.
