SYLVANIA HELPS CON EDISON REDUCE MAINTENANCE COSTS, IMPROVE HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES AND REDUCE ENERGY

The Situation

Con Edison is a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc., one of the nation's largest investor-owned energy companies. For more than 175 years it has been supplying the energy that powers New York City. The Con Edison warehouse in Astoria, N.Y., serves as the main distribution center for all maintenance items that support the infrastructure and field services. Con Edison was looking to reduce maintenance costs, improve health and safety issues, and reduce energy in this facility. The existing consisted of a combination of older high-intensity discharge , including mercury vapor, high-pressure sodium and metal halide systems. Light levels and color varied throughout the 320,000 square-foot warehouse. Stocking the various lamps and wattages to maintain these systems was difficult. Another goal of Con Edison was to integrate a sensor to control vacant areas and aisles adding to operating savings and system performance.

The Solution

The solution was to replace the old HID system with the SYLVANIA PENTRON T5HO / QUICKTRONIC® PHO system for its ability to achieve consistent levels, high color rendering, lower energy usage and, with the integration of occupancy sensors, turn-off in unoccupied areas within the facility.

Over 2,000 PENTRON T5HO lamps and 1,000 QUICKTRONIC PHO ballasts were installed in the facility. This solution increased levels, improved uniformity, and improved color consistency throughout the warehouse. The QUICKTRONIC PHO programmed rapid start ballasts keeps maintenance costs down by providing long lamp life with occupancy sensors.

"The Pentron T5HO system installed at our facility achieved savings of 36 percent versus the existing H.I.D. system. It dramatically improved the visual performance of the space in vertical and horizontal footcandles along with the 80+ CRI light source. We also benefit from SYLVANIA's QUICK 60+® system warranty," said Peter Jacobson, Con Edison specialist.
