HPL ULTRA PLUS (UCF) lamps light the courtyard on the ground of Castle Clinton, a national historic landmark in lower Manhattan
The continuing restoration of Battery Park in New York City reached an historic high note as Castle Clinton became the centerpiece of a celebration of light. Leni Schwendinger was invited to create a backdrop for an event hosted by OSRAM SYLVANIA to honor the work of the Battery Conservancy, New York City Parks and Recreation and Con Edison in restoring lower Manhattan to its former prominence as a center for arts and entertainment.
The event was held on the ground of Castle Clinton, a national historic landmark maintained by the National Park Service. Each day, the castle serves as a thoroughfare for the thousands of visitors and commuters who travel by ferry to Ellis Island and other points south. Few, if any, of these visitors would have recognized the castle during the evening event.
Schwendinger designed a projection of the "Duke's Plan", a map of 17th Century Manhattan. This aerial view was then orchestrated to create a carpet of light throughout the courtyard; the guests were bathed in green, lavender, blue, and scarlet. Schwendinger used OSRAM high performance photo-optic HPL 575 lamps exclusively donated for the occasion. In addition, the stone walls of the castle were softly illuminated by HPL lamps. HPL ULTRA PLUS (UCF) high performance ultra compact segmented filament lamps are designed for stage, studio and architectural applications.
Warrie Price, President of the Battery Conservancy, said, "Castle Clinton has never looked more striking. This is a wonderful prelude to the plans we have to restore Castle Clinton to one of its former uses as a theatre".
The Battery Conservancy was invited to discuss its plans for the restoration of Castle Clinton with members of the New York Chapter, Illuminating Engineering Society. Approximately 40 members attended a detailed presentation by Warrie Price prior to the event.
The event was timed to coincide with the lighting of The Sphere salvaged from the World Trade Center and moved to its present location in Battery Park. OSRAM SYLVANIA President & CEO Charlie Jerabek was on hand to throw the switch on the new lighting, which features SYLVANIA METALARC lamps. ConEdison has donated over 90 ICETRON lamps to light the perimeter of the park and the Eisenhower Mall.
