New lights illuminate "The Sphere" memorial and Eisenhower Mall at the Battery

The Parks Department, The Battery Conservancy, Consolidated Edison and OSRAM SYLVANIA have joined together to develop a new lighting system in the Battery. This innovative lighting initiative is part of the continuing efforts to revitalize lower Manhattan. Parks worked with The Battery Conservancy, Consolidated Edison and the Downtown Alliance to add 20 ICETRON® lamps to the Eisenhower Mall. The selected lighting provides longer life and greater energy efficiency than conventional light sources.

OSRAM SYLVANIA offered new lighting for Fritz Koenig's, "The Sphere", which was recovered from the granite fountain in the center of the 5-acre World Trade Center Plaza. The lighting at "The Sphere" features ceramic metal halide lamps, which offer superior color rendering and energy efficiency. The sculpture and The Eternal Flame that was lit on Wednesday September 11, 2002 serve as an interim memorial to commemorate the lives of those lost in the World Trade Center attack and in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

"As part of our ongoing efforts to rejuvenate Lower Manhattan, Parks is pleased to add new lighting to "The Sphere" Memorial and the Eisenhower Mall in the Battery," said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. "Battery Park is the place where New York City started, and it has been a premiere tourist destination. With our major renovation underway, and more visitors coming to pay homage to the World Trade Center memorials, this new lighting is being introduced at just the right time.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with The Battery Conservancy, Con Edison and OSRAM SYLVANIA to improve this park and other parks throughout the City," said Commissioner Benepe.  Warrie Price, President of The Battery Conservancy, added, "This is a wonderful beginning for our program to rebuild the Battery. This park has a tradition of providing outdoor life for lower Manhattan and the new lighting is symbolic of the rebirth of downtown. It will help our residents, evening commuters and visitors more fully enjoy the Battery as it illuminates the walkways leading to "The Sphere" and Eternal Flame. We are so grateful to Con Ed and OSRAM SYLVANIA for making this possible."

"Con Edison is proud to participate in the lighting of The Sphere, which has become a symbol of New York City's resiliency," said Lou Rana, Con Edison vice president, Manhattan Electric Operations. "Con Edison's participation in this and the lighting of the Tribute in Light renews the company's commitment to Lower Manhattan, and is a tribute to the victims of September 11. Our engineers and designers are proud to be part of this lasting monument that will attract visitors from around the country and the world."

OSRAM SYLVANIA President and CEO, Charles A. Jerabek, said, "ICETRON has been the choice of Con Edison throughout the renovation of Battery Park. We are pleased to partner with The Battery Conservancy, New York City Parks and Recreation and Con Edison in this most appropriate gesture of remembrance. The addition of the lighting unique to the sphere is a compliment to the work that continues to improve the experience of visitors to Lower Manhattan."
