LIGHTING DESIGN FOR NIKEGoddess STORE CREATES ENERGY EFFICIENCY WITH A SOPHISTICATED LOOK

The Situation

The Nike Design Group combined market research, product information, competitive intelligence and trends in the marketplace to develop the design for the prototype NIKEGoddess store opened in Newport Beach, Calif. The results were an emphasis on a comfortable, modern environment with a residential appeal that represents a lifestyle approach rather than the sports themes found in other Nike stores.

A full scale mockup of the prototype store was constructed by the Design Group in a warehouse just outside Portland, Oregon. It incorporates materials selected to reinforce Nike's goal of sustainability. As an example, wood-printed plastic laminates were used to replace harvested wood veneers for most of the store fixtures and tables.

The challenge presented to James Benya, PE, FIES, IALD, LC and Michael Larsen of Benya Lighting Design was to create a system to support the sophisticated look and feel developed by the Nike Design Team and BOORA Architecture.

The design also had to meet the State of California Title 24 energy regulations for retail space, as well as energy criteria in other locations where additional stores could be opened.  As they began to develop a design scheme, Larsen and Benya evaluated the latest in SYLVANIA lighting technology for the project with Katrina Tadic, a commercial engineer with OSRAM SYLVANIA. At the same time, they worked with BOORA and the Nike team on material selection and lighting fixture development for the prototype store.

The Solution

To artfully support the brand as revealed in materials and colors in the proposed store environment, Benya and Larsen's design focused on halogen lamps as the key light source for the project. They combined 37-watt TRU-AIM IR® MR16 lamps and 60-and 80-watt CAPSYLITE IR® PAR38 lamps. The narrow beam MR16's allowed light to solely focus on key portions of a display while the PAR lamps provided traditional illumination for general displays throughout the store.

SYLVANIA's 28-watt PENTRON® T5 fluorescent lamps were selected for use in light boxes and valances set in portions of the store. The lamps provided the high quality feeling the sophisticated store design required. Benya also specified SYLVANIA's DULUX® TE 32-watt lamps for general lighting in the store.

"This design meets any other U.S. or foreign energy code where a store is located," said Benya. "All the lighting is 3000K and provides warm feeling to showcase Nike's women's line."
