OSRAM SYLVANIA is committed to reducing our environmental impact, including our carbon footprint.  Reducing energy consumption is one of the most effective ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants.  That's why we're so committed to helping our customers save energy with our efficient solutions.

As a company, we're finding ways to lower our own carbon dioxide emissions.  Beginning in 2007, we've set aggressive annual energy reduction goals for all our facilities in North America.  In addition, we're taking active measures to understand our carbon footprint and develop plans to lower it over the next several years.

Climate Leaders:

In 2007, we joined the
EPA Climate Leaders partnership.  This program works with companies to develop comprehensive climate change strategies. We'll commit to reducing our impact on the global environment by completing a corporate-wide inventory of our greenhouse gas emissions based on a quality management system, setting aggressive reduction goals, and annually reporting progress to EPA.

The Climate Project

The Climate Project is a national, independent movement to educate and challenge citizens and governments to take action against the rising crisis of global warming. To learn more about the non-profit organization and their efforts to bring education, community information, research and citizen action programs to communities across the country, visit www.theclimateproject.org

SYLVANIA is proud to support the work of The Climate Project and its efforts to encourage individuals to take steps in addressing climate change.

New Hampshire Carbon Challenge:

THE NH CARBON CHALLENGE is an organization that encourages consumers to reduce their household's carbon dioxide emissions by 10,000 pounds per year.  An online carbon footprint calculator to help identify actions in the home to reduce energy consumption, costs, and greenhouse gas emissions. As actions are selected to reduce energy usage, tailored savings estimates are shown.

ENERGY STAR:

We're proud to be an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for six years in a row.

Products like SYLVANIA CFLs that earn the ENERGY STAR use less energy and prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. With energy costs and global warming top-of-mind for consumers, SYLVANIA is committed to offering solutions that help consumers conserve energy and improve the quality of our environment.

Transportation:

Transportation-related air pollution accounts for one third of all carbon emissions in the US.  OSRAM SYLVANIA has taken steps to reduce these emissions -- from our own fleet as well as from those of our suppliers.

Transporting more products at once:

Through advanced computer software and scientific methods, we have optimized packaging systems from primary through secondary to unit load, saving packaging materials, pallets, fuel, transportation, and warehouse space, without compromising shipping performance.

In addition, we have reformatted the packaging of some of our products (such as the 13-watt MiniTwist) to reduce the overall impact on the environment.  We have incorporated a nest-able format that led to smaller packaging and cube size reduction of up to 2.5 times.  This also reduces the amount of raw materials needed and increases the number of products that can be shipped at a time, improving transportation efficiency and saving fuel and associated air pollution.

No Idling:

Our SYLVANIA Lighting Services (SLS) fleet of close to 500 vehicles implemented a no-idling policy in 2005, resulting in the savings of thousands of gallons of diesel fuel and associated carbon dioxide emissions.

OSRAM SYLVANIA requires all delivery vehicles to turn off engines at each of our facilities.

Speed Management:

Our SLS fleet implements speed management policies to reduce the amount of fuel consumed, and the amount of transportation-related air pollution it generates.
