National Parks Foundation - Relighting the National Mall

As a gift to the nation in 2011, OSRAM SYLVANIA was privileged to relight the National Mall in Washington, DC, from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol building, with solid state lighting.  One hundred seventy-four D6 area lighting LED retrofit kits, assembled in OSRAM SYLVANIA’s
St. Marys, Pa., plant, were installed across the park in early December 2011, enabling the Mall to achieve its desired energy-efficiency and aesthetic goals. The lampsare already helping the Mall reduce energy consumption from lighting by 65 percent. The Mall will see reduced maintenance and replacement costs over the life of the LEDs, thanks to the SYLVANIA LED solution’s rated lamp life of 50,000 hours – roughly double that of HID lamps.

EMerge Alliance

The EMerge Alliance is a non-profit, open industry association with over 100 member organizations dedicated to promoting the rapid adoption of safe, low voltage DC power distribution in commercial buildings. A family of innovative power distribution standards will integrate interior infrastructures, power, controls and devices in a common microgrid platform to facilitate the hybrid use of AC and DC power throughout buildings for unprecedented design and spaceflexibility, greater energy efficiency and improved sustainability.

OSRAM SYLVANIA is a founding governing member of the EMerge Alliance and is an active member of the board.  With several lighting
components and systems on the list of registered products under the OSRAM, SYLVANIA, and ENCELIUM brands, we are committed to enabling
the adoption of DC power in buildings.  Traxon Technologies is also a participating member of the EMerge Alliance with a portfolio of dynamic lighting solutions that are fundamentally DC-powered.

ENERGY STAR

OSRAM SYLVANIA has been an ENERGY STAR partner since CFLs were added to the program in 1999, and we’re proud to have been recognized by the government program 10 years in a row for our commitment to energy efficiency, education and outreach, and promotion of the ENERGY STAR label with our wide range of lighting products.

Better Plants Partnership

In 2009, OSRAM SYLVANIA joined the US Department of Energy’s Save Energy Now Leader program, now renamed as the Better Plants Partnership.  We’ve committed to reduce energy intensity at our US manufacturing plants by 25% over 10 years.  Through energy-efficiency initiatives implemented by our Green Team, including rebuilding our main glass furnace in Kentucky, lighting upgrades at all our facilities, and heat recovery upgrades, we’re on track to meet that target.

Clean Cities

OSRAM SYLVANIA’s SYLVANIA Lighting Services joined the US Department of Energy’s National Clean Fleets Partnership in 2011.  The Clean Fleets Partnership works with select large private fleets committed to leading the way in reducing petroleum use by exploring alternative fuel options and implementing fuel economy measures.   In 2011, OSRAM SYLVANIA was awarded a Clean Fleets award for our activities in reducing emissions from our fleet, including routing efficiency measures, reducing the weight of our utility vehicles, and adding battery-operated aerial trucks to reduce idling.

Workplace Charging Challenge

In 2012, President Obama announced the EV Everywhere Challenge to accelerate the implementation of electric vehicle usage over the next 10 years.  The US Department of Energy created the Workplace Charging Challenge to increase the number of American employers offering workplace charging.  OSRAM SYLVANIA joined the Challenge in 2013, offering a dual charging station at our headquarters in Massachusetts, available to employees and the public.

SmartWay Transport Partnership

In 2007, OSRAM SYLVANIA joined the US EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership to assess and reduce the environmental impact of the transport of our products.  We work jointly with our customers and transportation providers to evaluate ways to reduce emissions throughout our supply chain.  With SmartWay, we are committed to increasing the use of designated SmartWay carriers, increasing container-direct opportunities to our distribution centers and customers, and migrating LTL (less than load) shipments to truckload opportunities.

SmartWay also extends to our sales fleet.  All vehicles must be EPA SmartWay certified, achieving a high level of performance for both fuel efficiency and tailpipe emissions.  Along with our other fleet initiatives, this effort helped reduce our corporate mobile source emissions by over 19% since 2006.

US Green Building Council

OSRAM SYLVANIA has been a member of the US Green Building Council, a nonprofit organization leading the development and implementation of green building rating systems and practices, since 2003.  We’ve helped our customers pursue and achieve LEED certification for their properties.  We are committed to continuing our active participation in standards-setting, rating system development and customer education about green building approaches.

Also since 2003, we have exhibited at the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, the world’s largest conference dedicated to green building, and we were a founding member of the Greenbuild Exhibitor Advisory Working Group in 2007, serving as chair in 2011 and 2012.

Green Parking Council

In 2012, OSRAM SYLVANIA joined the Green Parking Council (GPC), a national 501(c)(3) organization providing leadership and oversight for the green conversion of parking facilities to sustainable, environmentally responsible assets.  GPC is developing certification and credentialing programs, open-sourced standards, professional leadership and educational development and training for organizations and individuals in the parking industry. OSRAM SYLVANIA is advising the GPC in the lighting component of its certification development as well as providing lighting training and education to its members.
