Light is everywhere! Whether we’re consciously thinking about it or not, light plays an immensely pivotal role in our lives  That is why I’m proud that 2015 was finally the year the United Nations declared 2015 the “International Year of Light (IYL 2015).” The goal of this effort is to raise global awareness around how light-based technologies can provide solutions for challenges in energy, education, agriculture and health, which are a mere sampling of the issues we at OSRAM aim to solve every day.

While celebrating IYL 2015, we’re also gearing up for LIGHTFAIR International 2015, where thousands of lighting experts and enthusiasts like me will gather in the Big Apple. In advance of the show, we’re reminded of how there is a harmonious connection between IYL 2015 and this year’s LIGHTFAIR theme, “The Global Language of Light.” Light has the capacity to impact our health and wellness, as well as illuminate our history for new generations to discover. It’s our vision to advance lighting technologies by personalizing them with smart, connected products to change the way people live, for the better.

In the past 5 years alone, OSRAM has spent more than $1.6 billion on research and development—moving past traditional lamps and fixtures to creating tailor-made applications using energy-efficient LED technology. Our latest advancements include an exciting portfolio of business and home solutions that put lighting controls and preferences at your very fingertips.

Of the newest technologies we’ll introduce at LIGHTFAIR is the OmniPoint™ wireless, array-based LED illumination system. The luminaire features a remotely controlled light source that offers flexible and reconfigurable light output, while using cutting edge technology to create, configure, save and recall ambient and/or task lighting designs. Intelligent, powerful lighting tools such as OmniPoint™ are defining the future of the lighting industry. And that’s just one of the many reasons why we’re excited to bring it out of the OSRAM Concept Lab and into LIGHTFAIR for the first time. We hope you stop by and see it for yourself.

In our soon-to-be released OSRAM SYLVANIA Socket Survey, we also learned that 83 percent of Americans believe smart lighting is a good introduction to home automation technologies, and 72 percent felt smart lighting will eventually replace traditional bulbs. As the home automation and smart home markets continue to grow, OSRAM LIGHTIFY™ offers a slate of cost-effective indoor/outdoor lighting products, controlled wirelessly via a mobile app. We expect LIGHTIFY to be a big hit at LIGHTFAIR 2015, as it was at CES in January.

As we continue to think of the connectivity of light, we need to think of what’s next for lighting on a global scale. What are our opportunities for innovation, and how can we continue to use the global language of light to touch lives?

We hope you join us at LIGHTFAIR booth #1922, May 5-7 in New York so we can have these discussions. Follow @SYLVANIA on Twitter and join the conversation with #LFI2015.
